I just got back from vacation and it was great. I went home to Georgia for about a week and I had some fun and got to relax a lot (which I needed severely). I also got to see some of my family that I haven’t seen in about 9 months or so.
I got to come back to Colorado and teach my break out group of 9th and 10th graders last night at youth. We were talking about James 1:19-27. While we were talking in our group, we came across several, very good points. We can’t just talk about our faith and our relationship with Jesus, we must live it out. The part that really hit home for me that I was teaching was the way that we should serve others. It’s very easy to serve someone else when they are grateful for what you are doing, but one of the hardest things to do is to serve someone who isn’t thankful for what they are receiving.
It’s easy to be a servant until you get treated like one.
I explained this doesn’t mean we are a door mat and allow others to walk all over us. But instead, it means to be Jesus to EVERYONE around you regardless if they are grateful for what you are doing. A lot of people even feel like they deserve to be served. Yeah, it’s hard to serve them too without saying something to them about their crappy attitude. There are times to call their attitude out on the carpet, but that doesn’t give you the excuse to not serve them, whatever that looks like.
This whole concept of serving others and not worrying about what you get in return is one that I have been struggling with for a long time. It’s a hard, frustrating battle that Jesus has called us to fight.
We have to remember that the Jesus didn’t call us to win; He called us to fight!
On a very random tangent, I put in my two weeks’ notice at my job yesterday. I have an incredible opportunity that I’m not going to turn down. I believe this is a step in the right direction on the journey that God has called me to.
I would venture to say that leaving a familiar and comfortable situation and stepping out on faith is really not taking a risk at all (most of the time). The biggest risk we could ever take is to not take any risks at all and refuse to step out of the boat onto the water to pursue Jesus.
